Dr. P.D. Patel to discuss Alzheimer’s disease at Dine with the Docs

Did you know that more than five million Americans are estimated to have Alzheimer’s disease? This irreversible, progressive brain disorder is the most common cause of dementia and is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, according to the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging.

May is National Mental Health Month and this month’s “Dine with the Docs” program features P.D. Patel, M.D. who specializes in psychiatry and neurology. Dr. Patel will discuss Alzheimer’s disease on Tuesday, May 8, in the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Conference Center on the basement level of the East Tower.

A complimentary dinner provided by the hospital is available in Chatters Café at 5:30 p.m. and the program will follow at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are required.

Prior to the presentation, there will be an information fair in the lower lobby of the hospital. Representatives of the Alzheimer’s Association, local support group, respite, and LCRH Behavioral Health Geriatric Unit will be available to discuss services and support available to Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers. Information exhibits will be available from 4:30 until 6:30 and are open to the community. No reservations are required for the information fair.

If you want to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease; if you have a loved one or a family history of the disease; or if you are a caregiver of an Alzheimer’s patient, this program will be of interest to you. Dr. Patel will discuss important information about how to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, what the risks for the disease are and how to recognize symptoms. He will also discuss treatment options. A question and answer session will follow the program.

Dr. Patel earned his medical degree at Baroda Medical College, India. After completing a residency in psychiatry at the University of Louisville and a residency in neurology at the University of Kentucky, he completed a fellowship in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Patel is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry.

“Dine with the Docs” is a regular monthly program series developed to educate interested persons regarding important health issues. The programs are sponsored as a public service by Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and the Lake Cumberland Chapter of Senior Friends and are open to the community.
