NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY® to be held Friday, February 3

January 30, 2017

Each year, people all across the United States commemorate February as Heart Month, and many participate in activities designed to raise awareness about heart health.
Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital (LCRH) is helping kickoff this special month on Friday, February 3, with a very special event – Wear Red Day®.
Celebrated the first Friday of each February, this special day is designed to help increase awareness about women’s heart disease. This is the 13th year the hospital has sponsored this event, which is free and open to the public.  It will be held at the Somerset Mall from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States? In the past, heart disease was often thought of as a man’s disease, but the truth is, one out of every three deaths of women each year is the result of heart disease or stroke.
Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital will be leading local efforts to provide information about heart disease and encourage area residents to learn more about their own heart health and how to avoid heart attacks and stroke.
The Wear Red Day® event features dozens of exhibitors who will provide a wide range of information about heart health, exercise, healthy lifestyles, nutrition, and community services as well as opportunities for a bit of pampering with hand massages and free nail painting with festive red nail polish!
This year’s event, “Party HEART-Y, Put Your Red Shoes On,” encourages attendees to get in the spirit of the day by wearing red and adding a festive pair of red shoes to their outfit. There will be a Red Shoe Contest at 12:00 noon at the mall’s Center Court.  Prizes will be given for the Highest Heel and the Most Bling.
There will also be refreshments, door prizes, and the opportunity to participate in some great Heart Month games – Cake Walk and BINGO with prizes for the winners.  Participants will also be encouraged to take a walk around the red line inside the Mall for their own heart health.
“We want to invite ladies from all over the region, along with the men who care about them, to join us for this great day of activities,” said Susan Ramsey Wilson, director of marketing and community relations at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.  “It will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about heart disease, learn more about your own health, and start (or stay) on a path to good health.”
Wilson added that the first fifty female heart disease survivors to register at the event will receive special recognition.
There will be a number of free health screenings for Wear Red Day® participants, including blood pressure, heart rate, BMI, pulmonary function, pulse oximetry, depression and mood disorder.
The LCRH Chest Pain Team from the hospital’s SCPC Accredited Chest Pain Center and Pulaski County EMS team members will provide information on heart attacks and will demonstrate hands only CPR to help attendees learn how lives can be saved with that technique.
The Stroke Team from the LCRH Advanced Primary Stroke Center will be taking blood pressures and doing free stroke risk assessments.
“Our exhibitors are a vital part of this special day,” Wilson added. “They are so dedicated to our community and region, and they always do such a great job in providing information and services for this event!”
