Dr. Stivers to discuss the importance of good nutrition

Everybody knows the old saying, “you are what you eat,” but we may not necessarily understand how true that statement really is.

You can find out the importance of what we eat at this month’s “Dine with the Docs” program.  Dr. Benjamin L. Stivers, general surgeon, will discuss “Nutrition.” The public meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 12, in the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Conference Center on the basement level of the East Tower.

A complementary dinner provided by the hospital is available in Chatters Café at 5:30 p.m. and the program will follow at 6:30 p.m.

Nutrition plays a very important role in our daily lives, and while we all know we should eat healthy meals, learning more about how food impacts us is vital. For example, did you know there are times when it is important to eat extra calories?  Did you know eating more protein is essential to healing wounds?

If you would like to learn more about how important nutrition is, this month’s program will be of interest to you. Dr. Stivers will discuss how our bodies use the nutrients that we eat especially in times of stress, such as surgery and wound healing. A question and answer session will follow the program.

Dr. Stivers is a graduate of the University of Louisville with a BS in Biology. He continued his education at the University of Louisville School of Medicine where he completed a Masters Degree in Physiology and Biophysics prior to earning his Doctor of Medicine degree.

Dr. Stivers completed his residency in General Surgery at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, where he was the recipient of the Joel A. Essig Outstanding Resident Award.

A native Kentuckian, Dr. Stivers has completed a number of research projects.  He has also made presentations for Surgical Grand Rounds at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, and on the national stage, in Washington, D.C. at a conference on minimally invasive surgery.  A member of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Stivers is in private practice with the Lake Cumberland Surgery Specialists, a three-physician general surgery group.

“Dine with the Docs” is a regular monthly program series developed to educate interested persons regarding important health issues.  The programs are sponsored as a public service by Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and the Lake Cumberland Chapter of Senior Friends.
