Senior Inpatient Behavioral Health Services

Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Senior Behavioral Health Services Unit is for adults 55 and older that are experiencing psychiatric symptoms which require 24 hour acute inpatient treatment. It is a secure unit located within the hospital facility. Patients are seen daily by a mental health provider. Medical issues requiring treatment will be managed by our hospital medical staff.

Mental health plays an essential role in the overall well-being of seniors. We provide both therapy and medication management for senior adults experiencing mental health conditions. Whether a loved one is experiencing increased anxiety and depression that interferes with their ability to function at their best, or suffering from behavioral issues resulting from dementia, we can offer a compassionate treatment plan for adults 55 and older that's customized to their individual needs, to help give them and you a better quality of life. Our Services

At Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, our senior behavioral health services include:

  • Qualified staff including psychiatrist, social worker, counselor, nurse and mental health technician
  • Treatment from a medical physician if indicated
  • An overall assessment of medical and behavioral health needs
  • Individualized treatment plans
  • Daily assessment and care by ¬†behavioral health professionals
  • Medication management
  • 24-hour nursing services
  • Recreational therapy
  • Occupational and Physical Therapy
  • Lab and imaging services
  • Individual, group and family therapy
  • Discharge planning, including coordination of follow-up care and assistance with alternative living arrangements if indicated
  • Coordination of follow-up care with a mental health and/or medical provider
  • Assistance with issues, including guardianship, power of attorney and/or advance directives

What We Treat

Conditions that we can help manage include:

  • Severe depression
  • Suicidal or thoughts of self-harm
  • Social withdrawal
  • Increased forgetfulness or confusion
  • Loss of interest in self-care
  • Insomnia and change in sleeping patterns
  • Mood changes
  • Delusions and/or hallucinations
  • Aggressive or combative behaviors
  • Behaviors that could cause potential harm to self or others (that are not typically characteristic of that person)
  • Agitation
  • Paranoia
  • Refusal to take medications
  • Recurrent thoughts of dying

Admission for Care

Admissions are accepted 24 hours a day by contacting the unit Intake Staff. Referrals for treatment can be made by family members, friends, physicians, psychologists and other mental health professionals, social workers, social service agencies,  hospital emergency departments and inpatient acute care facilities. Self-referrals are also accepted. Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital accepts Medicare, Medicaid and most other insurance payers.

Family Involvement

We believe that family involvement enhances care. We encourage family members to participate in the program as much as possible. Throughout the admission, our treatment team will contact you as needed. We will work closely with family to create a safe and appropriate discharge plan.
