Reaching and Maintaining Your Great New Weight
January 8, 2016
It’s not too late to join Pounds Off Pulaski
Dr. John Mobley is Monday’s speaker
If you have been trying to escape this freezing weather, playing catch-up at work or school, or just haven’t gotten around to it, it’s not too late to register for the 4th Annual Pounds Off Pulaski (POP)!
POP is a 12-week county-wide weight loss challenge sponsored by Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce. POP is open to any individual aged 18 or over.
If you would like to participate in this exciting program, you may still register in person on Monday, January 11 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in the Conference Centers on the basement level. The registration fee is $25. Weigh-ins will begin at 5:00 p.m. for individuals who have already registered and also for anyone else who would like to participate in the program.
During the 12-week challenge, POP meetings will be held each Monday evening at the hospital. These meetings are designed to provide support, information, and helpful tools to help participants keep on track so they can reach their personal goals. Speakers at the meetings will provide information on a variety of subjects from exercise to nutrition to the psychology of weight loss to keeping a journal. Participants will also be able to weigh in at the weekly POP meetings to keep track of their progress.
John C. Mobley, M.D., bariatric surgeon, will be the first speaker of the series on Monday, January 11. His presentation, “Reaching and Maintaining Your Great New Weight,” will provide important information for POP participants to help them get off to a good start on their journey to a healthier lifestyle and a lower body weight. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m.
A Laurel County native, Dr. Mobley received his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed his internship and a residency in general surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. Dr. Mobley is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and of the American College of Surgeons.
The 12-week POP challenge includes the opportunity to earn incentive points that count toward fun prizes provided by community partners for meeting certain goals. At the end of the challenge, the two males and two females who have the highest percentage of weight loss will win cash prizes.
All participants who complete the challenge will receive a celebration T-shirt – hopefully a size or two smaller than they used to wear.
POP has several important community partners who are providing discounts and opportunities for weight-loss success, including: Club Fit 24 Hour Fitness, Fit Maxx, Rocky Hollow Recreation Center, Sk8ter’s Paradise, Somerset Family Fitness Center, Turn it Up Dance and Fitness Studio and Zumba Gold at First Baptist Church- Teresa Hail, Instructor.
Additional partners who provide incentive prizes and program support include: Amedisys Home Health Care, Commonwealth Bariatric Center, Commonwealth Bariatric Physicians, Helping Hands Personal Care, Intrepid Home Health, Lake Cumberland District Health Department, Lifeline Home Health, Pulaski County Extension Service, Somerset Delivery, State Farm Insurance (Tammy Cundiff, Agent), The Center for Rural Development, and Time Warner Cable.
The City of Somerset, Pulaski County Government and Somerset Mall are also partnering to provide opportunities for participants to get some healthy exercise by walking. Media partners include Forcht Broadcasting, iHeart Radio and The Commonwealth-Jounal.
“We are grateful to have these excellent community partners for this exciting weight-loss challenge,” said Susan Ramsey Wilson. “Their support will not only help POP participants have a great time during the program, but will help them establish healthy lifestyle and exercise regimens for longer-lasting, positive results.”
