Experience Restful Nights with Inspire: Treat Sleep Apnea without a Mask

At Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, we understand that living with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can be challenging, especially for those who struggle to adapt to traditional CPAP treatments. That’s why we are excited to offer Inspire therapy—a revolutionary, FDA-approved solution that addresses the root cause of sleep apnea from within your body, providing a comfortable alternative for patients seeking relief. Inspire therapy is a breakthrough implantable treatment option for people with OSA who are unable to use or get consistent benefit from CPAP.

Inspire therapy is a mask-free solution for people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who have tried and struggled with CPAP. Through a simple-to-use system including the Inspire® implant, Inspireremote and Inspire® app, Inspire therapy enables you to control your OSA treatment from the palm of your hand.

How Inspire Works

While you sleep, Inspire monitors every breath you take. Based on your unique breathing patterns, the system delivers mild stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve, which controls the movement of your tongue and other key airway muscles. By stimulating these muscles, Inspire helps keep your airway open during sleep.

Using a handheld remote, you can easily activate Inspire before bedtime. The system continuously adjusts based on your breathing, ensuring you're supported throughout the night. When you wake up, simply turn off the therapy with the remote. You have the flexibility to increase or decrease the stimulation strength and can even pause therapy during the night if needed.

Who is a Candidate for Inspire Therapy?

You may benefit from Inspire therapy if you meet the following criteria:

  • You have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.
  • You find it difficult to use CPAP consistently or experience minimal benefit from it.
  • You are not significantly overweight.
  • You are over the age of 18.

Your healthcare provider will perform a comprehensive evaluation, including a physical examination of your airway, to determine if Inspire therapy is a suitable option for you.

The Inspire Advantage

Unlike CPAP, Inspire therapy works silently and unobtrusively while you sleep, allowing you to move freely without the confinement of a mask. The fully implanted system consists of two leads—one that senses your breathing and another that delivers stimulation—all powered by a small battery.
